Congrats, Mama and Papa! You made it through those early weeks of newborn life, even if you lost some sleep along the way. In Malaysia, this recovery time is called the “confinement period”, but for your baby, these first three months are filled with rapid development and new experiences.
As you move from the survival mode of month one into the interactive joy of month three, here’s what you can look forward to as your baby grows.
Month 1: The Golden Month of Connection
In the beginning, your baby’s world is a bit of a blur – literally! At one month old, they can only see about 20 to 30cm away, which is just far enough to see your face while feeding.
- Touch is Key: Skin-to-skin contact is particularly important at this stage, as it promotes bonding and comfort. Infants also display strong reflexes, such as the rooting reflex (seeking a nipple) and the startle reflex.
- Parental Milestone: Early milestones are not exclusive to the infant; parents also experience significant growth. Building confidence as a new parent, such as mastering swaddling techniques or telling the difference between cries of hunger and tiredness, represent key achievements. Give yourself a pat on the back for every little success.
Month 2: Hello, Personality!
By the second month, a significant developmental milestone can be observed, and this is the social smile. At this stage, infants begin to respond genuinely to voices and facial cues. This is no longer just a reflex; it’s a true reaction to your voice and face.
- Coos and Gurgles: This is when your baby starts experimenting with vowel sounds like “ooh” and “aah”. Encourage them by “talking back”. This can be as simple as chatting with them about your day in the kitchen or garden, which helps nurture their brain development.
- Tummy Time: Begin encouraging short tummy time sessions to help strengthen your baby's neck muscles. They may only tolerate a minute or two before getting fussy, and that's completely normal. Every little bit gets them ready to roll over in the future.
Month 3: Reaching Out to the World
By the third month, your baby is becoming much more coordinated and is actively engaging with their surroundings.
- Hand-Eye Coordination: You’ll notice your baby staring at their own hands in wonder. This newfound fascination often leads to them batting at dangling toys and even reaching out to grab your hair or jewellery.
- Physical Strength: During periods of tummy time, most babies are able to lift their head and chest, supporting themselves with their arms.
- Better Sleep Cycles: Although sleeping through the night may not yet occur consistently, many three-month-old infants begin to experience longer periods of uninterrupted sleep as their digestive capacity increases.

Navigating the Challenges
Parenting in Malaysia comes with no shortage of unique advice from well-meaning aunties and elders. While their insights can be valuable to remember, it’s important to keep in mind that every child is unique. Trust your intuition. If you ever feel overwhelmed, treat yourself with compassion. It’s perfectly acceptable to limit visitors in those early weeks so you and your partner can settle into your new routine together.
